Peanut Butter Recall Notice - 9 February 2026

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ButtaNutt Announces Food Safety Product Recall of Limited Peanut Butter Batches Due to Elevated Aflatoxin Levels

PAARL, SOUTH AFRICA – February 9, 2026

ButtaNutt (Pty) Ltd has initiated a food safety product recall of limited batches of its Peanut Butter products after internal routine testing identified slightly elevated aflatoxin levels which were above the regulatory limit of 10 ppb (parts per billion).

During the routine internal testing, ButtaNutt identified an initial result of 46 ppb and a re-test result of 28 ppb in the highest affected batch. ButtaNutt is taking immediate action to ensure consumer safety and regulatory compliance.

Explanation of Health Risk

We wish to provide context regarding the health risks to consumers who may have already consumed a portion of the affected products:

-       Acute vs. Chronic Exposure: Health experts distinguish between "acute" (once-off) exposure and "chronic" (long-term) exposure. Primary risks, such as liver health concerns, are typically linked to regular, long-term ingestion over decades.

-       Safety Margin: Scientific guidelines suggest that an adult would generally need to consume over 2.4 kg of contaminated peanut butter (at levels of 500 ppb) at least three times a week to potentially experience acute toxic effects.

-       Conclusion: Consumption of a standard serving is considered a once-off exposure and is highly unlikely to cause immediate or severe health effects.

The majority of affected stock has been secured and removed from market. However, 83 individual units remain with consumers. ButtaNutt hereby requests that consumers check their cupboards for the following products and batch codes:

·       ButtaNutt Chocolate Peanut Butter 250g: BB 15/07/2027
